Child neglect is topic of summit

A community summit on child neglect has been scheduled for Friday.

Jackson County's panel for the Child Abuse Prevention Treatment Act is hosting the free event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Smullin Center, 2825 E. Barnett Road, on the Medford campus of Rogue Valley Medical Center.

The program aims to increase community awareness and the sense of urgency concerning child neglect, to educate the public about intervention and support for neglectful families and to engage a variety of community members.

Guest speaker and facilitator is Dee Wilson, director of the Northwest Institute for Children and Families.

Local officials last year confirmed 736 victims of child neglect or threat of harm across Jackson County. Recurring maltreatment of children is 39 percent higher locally than elsewhere in the state, according to the Children First for Oregon 2006 county data book.

To register for the summit, call Libby McDaniel at the Children's Advocacy Center, 734-5437.
