Cemetery cleanups Saturday

More than 200 volunteers from the Mormon church will spruce up four of the region's cemeteries Saturday in an event called Helping Hands.

It is set from 9 a.m. to noon at Pioneer Cemetery in Phoenix, Eastwood Cemetery in Medford, Stearns Cemetery in Talent and Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka, Calif.

"I really appreciate this kind of community involvement," said Stan Bartel, Phoenix City Councilman and member of the Pioneer Cemetery board of directors. "This is not a city-owned cemetery, and so any work has to be performed by volunteers, and that's why the Mormon help is so terrific."

The volunteers will weed, paint and trim grass.
