Cave Junction shooting lands one man in jail, another in hospital

One Illinois Valley man was critically injured and another faces attempted murder and other charges after a Monday night shooting in the Junction Inn parking lot in Cave Junction.

Oregon State Police reported that two troopers were working in the Cave Junction area at about 10:45 p.m. Monday when a report of a shooting in the parking lot of Junction Inn on South Redwood Highway came in.

The troopers arrived at the motel within minutes and found Immanuel Angel Day, 32, critically injured with a single gunshot to the chest, police reported. Day was taken by Mercy Flights air ambulance to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, then transferred to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where police said he was listed in critical condition this morning.

Ronald Dale Fehlhaber, 58, was lodged in Josephine County Jail on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, and unlawful possession and use of a weapon, police said.

OSP's preliminary investigation indicates the two men are acquaintances who were involved in an altercation in the motel parking lot when Fehlhaber shot Day one time using a 9 mm handgun, according to an OSP release. OSP Criminal Investigations Division detectives continue to investigate.

They are seeking witnesses to the shooting and ask anyone with information about this case to call Sgt. Jeff Fitzgerald at 541-618-7952 or Detective Annie Harris at 541-618-7967.
