A firefighter works in thick smoke to extinguish a house fire on Tripp Street.

Cause of fire under investigation

Firefighters quickly contained a blaze that ripped through a Tripp Street home this afternoon, officials said.

The fire sparked at around 2:30 p.m. at the back door of the house, which sits off East Main Street just south of Hawthorne Park. It quickly moved up a wall and into the second story, Medford Fire Department officials said.

A young boy was at home with his mother when the fire began. Both exited the home safely along with a cat and a dog, officials said.

Five fire engines and 20 firefighters battled the blaze, forcing police to close Tripp Street, which is only about a block long. The street remained closed for more than it hour. It has since reopened.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze.
