Catch a flick for free, or almost

Celebrate the final day of the month and escape heat forecast to rise to the mid 90s today with a movie of the free or almost free variety.

Kids can catch the G-rated "The Tale of Desperaux," the story of a mouse that plans happiness for all, for free at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd., at 12:30 p.m.

For $1, they can catch "Igor," a 2008 movie about an evil scientist's assistant who aspires to become a scientist himself, at 10 a.m. at Medford's Tinseltown Theatre, 651 Medford Center. The deal is offered weekly as part of the chain's Summer Movie Clubhouse program.

The 1950 flick "Sunset Blvd," one in a series highlighting films by John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder (this one is Wilder's), is free at 1 p.m. in the Meese Conference Room of the Hannon Library at Southern Oregon University, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd.

Finally, if your tastes run more to the political, "Posada Carriles," a film about terrorist Luis Posada Carriles and his attacks on Cuba, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Ashland library. The free showing is sponsored by Peace House and the Jackson County Greens.
