Cascade takes over Sunset volleyball lead

REEDSPORT — Becca Sellers came up big in the most important volleyball match of the season for Cascade Christian.

In the battle of unbeaten Sunset League teams, the Challengers came away with an emphatic 25-11, 25-8, 25-15 victory at Reedsport Thursday.

Sellers, a sophomore outside hitter, pounded 13 kills to set the tone in the match.

"This was (Sellers) best varsity match," said Cascade Christian first-year coach Trea Connick, whose team improved to 5-0 in the Sunset and 10-4 overall. "She hit the ball wonderful. It's exciting to finally see her connect with our setter."

Senior setter Erika Thorpe orchestrated the Challengers' offense by dishing out 24 assists. Thorpe also had a team-high three aces, while junior middle Emily Sellers provided six blocks.

"Our hitting and blocking was effective," said Connick. "They did not have a block and Becca was able to put the ball where she wanted to."

Skyline Conference

HIIDDEN VALLEY 3, PHOENIX 0 — At Phoenix, senior Megan Swanson had seven kills and senior Destinee Hernandez added five as visiting Hidden Valley (18-2, 1-1 Skyline) rolled to a 25-11, 25-8, 25-15 win against conference-foe Phoenix.

Seniors Breanne Ross and Victoria Harris led Hidden Valley with five digs each. Phoenix was led by junior middle blocker Chelsea Passante, who had three aces.

NORTH VALLEY 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 — At Merlin, Savana Drew put down 13 kills to help North Valley to a 25-12, 25-16, 23-25 victory.

Jessica Eskitgis was a perfect 10-for-10 serving with three aces and setter Alexandra Farmer had 24 assists.

For Illinois Valley, Sarah Pavlacky served six aces, Nichole Bowman had 11 digs and Brittney Lloyd 11 assists.

HENLEY 3, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Klamath Falls, Lacey Reed had 10 kills to lead Henley to a 25-9, 25-8, 25-16 Skyline Conference win.

Kayla Bowker had six service aces and Sierra Patzke had 26 assists for the Hornets.

Southern Cascade League

ST. MARY'S 3, LOST RIVER 1 — St. Mary's went to a different look and responded with a 25-19, 25-17, 14-25, 25-20 home victory.

The Crusader (6-8, 2-3 SCL) offense was powered by middles Kylee Adderson (13 kills, 4 blocks) and Lauren Thompson (12 kills, 3 blocks).

Senior setter Cynthia Naumes had a productive all-around match with 31 assists, 18 digs and she was 17-for-17 from the service line with three aces.

Sophomore outside Danielle Shubat had five kills, but was a stalwart on serve receive with 20 passes.


EAGLE POINT JV 3, BUTTE FALLS 2 — At Butte Falls, Eagle Point prevailed 25-16, 18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-8.

Senior middle Brianna Wright paced Butte Falls (2-4, 2-3 MVL) with 14 kills and eight blocks and freshman Beth Sutfin added six kills and five blocks.

Logger setters Karlee Stephenson and Cheyenna Kirkpatrick combined for 25 assists.
