Caring here, caring there

Today is United Way's annual Day of Caring and Southern Oregon University's Civic Engagement Day, events that put volunteers into the community to clean up the place.

For the Day of Caring, more than 500 volunteers will be at a dozen locations around the Rogue Valley, including the American Red Cross, Arc of Jackson County, Ashland Supportive Housing, Community Works, Family Nurturing Center, Head Start, Mediation Works, OnTrack Dad's Program, Phoenix Counseling Center, Rogue Valley Family YMCA and Roots & Wings, a preschool.

The Day of Caring is the largest volunteer day in the community and coincides with the kickoff of the fall United Way fundraising drive. The campaign goal this year is $1,123,000 and to date more than 25 percent has been received in pledges and receipts.

Civic Engagement Day volunteers will focus this year on alleys around Medford's Jackson Elementary School.

The group, which is still seeking volunteers, will meet at 11 a.m. at the Santo Community Center, 701 N. Columbus Ave., for assignments. Volunteers will fill potholes with gravel and pick up trash. They should bring work gloves.
