Car hits, severely injures 8-year-old Medford boy

An 8-year-old Medford boy was reported in critical condition and was being flown to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland after he was struck by a vehicle this afternoon while trying to cross Crater Lake Avenue near his home on Forest Hills Drive.
Wyatt Chase Matthews, of the 3100 block of Forest Hills Road, was accompanied by his older sisters, ages 15 and 11, when he was struck while crossing the busy avenue shortly after noon. The driver of the northbound vehicle, 19-year-old Jessica Genevive Hummel of Talent, was not hurt and no citations have been issued.
Medford police and Mercy Flights responded to the scene. The boy was transported by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center with serious head injuries. He was later flown to Doernbecher’s and was in critical condition this afternoon.
Police said an investigation is ongoing.
