Britt lineup includes Earle, Browne, Styx, Martin

Singer Steve Earle, rock legends Jackson Browne and Styx, Grammy-winning banjo player (and yes, comic, actor and writer) Steve Martin and Canadian rockers Barenaked Ladies were among the headliners announced tonight for the Britt Festivals’ 48th season of music.

The festival kicks off June 13 with a concert by Gypsy Soul and runs through a Sept. 17 show with Straight No Chaser, serving up 39 performances including four low-priced movie nights featuring the likes of The Beatles and Jerry Garcia. Tickets go on sale April 9 to Britt members and May 17 to the public.

Concertgoers used to the upward spiral in ticket prices may see a little relief this summer. About half of this summer’s concerts have reserved seats topping out at under $50, and many shows have lawn seating priced in the $20s and $30s. By far the priciest ducat of the season is the July 26 gig of Jackson Browne with David Lindley at $86.

“We tried to keep prices down for people struggling with the economy,” Britt Executive Director Jim Fredericks said. “We were able to find some (artists) at good price points.”

Fredericks said that during the off-season Britt went after artists who love performing live, as opposed to those who look at touring as necessary to support recording sales. Live performance has generally assumed a position of more importance in the industry with the decline of CDs.

Country star Gary Allan, jazz/pop star Jamie Cullum, guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, radio host Garrison Keillor, singer Brandi Carlile, indie darlings The New Pornographers, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff and rockers Michael Franti and Spearhead are among the other headliners on their way to Jacksonville.
