Best Live Theater

Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is a favorite among readers for its top-notch, nearly 800 performances of 11 plays on three stages over eight months.

Founded in 1935, the Tony Award-winning OSF was conceived when Angus Bowmer recognized a striking resemblance between the roofless walls of an old Chautauqua building and a 17th-century sketch of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. He began with two plays mixed in with boxing performances to help generate revenue, then proceeded to build one of the largest professional, nonprofit theaters in the nation.

OSF now operates on an annual budget of nearly $27 million with annual attendance of approximately 400,000.
