Bend police officer kills suspected burglar

Police agencies are investigating a fatal Friday night shooting by a Bend police officer.

At approximately 10:22 p.m., Bend police officers responded to a reported possible burglary-in-progress at 2878 NE Jackdaw Drive in Bend. The address was the location where earlier in the day Bend Police Department had served a search warrant and seized illegally possessed firearms, heroin and methamphetamine, according to a press release from Oregon State Police.

When police arrived, one officer encountered a man exiting the back of the residence and shot him.

Medical aid was provided at the scene by police officers and responding personnel from Bend Fire and Rescue. The 31-year-old man, who was not a resident where the incident occurred, was transported to St. Charles Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time. An autopsy is pending.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. The officer's name is also withheld at this time, OSP reported.

The case is being investigated by the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division and Deschutes County District Attorney's Office, with the assistance of Deschutes County Sheriff's Office and Bend Police Department.
