Bed Bath & Beyond will open in Medford mall in 2011

Bed Bath & Beyond will open early next year in the lower-level Rogue Valley Mall space vacated by Linens 'N' Things nearly two years ago.

Bed Bath & Beyond had 10 stores in Oregon and 972 in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada at the end of August.

Linens 'N' Things fared well in Southern Oregon, but the company was saddled with debt and folded when it failed to emerge from bankruptcy. Bed Bath & Beyond, on the other hand, has done well in recent quarters.

The Union, N.J.-based company's fiscal second-quarter earnings climbed 34 percent as the housewares retailer recorded its fourth straight quarter of double-digit sales growth. Bed Bath & Beyond reported a $181.8 million profit, while revenue grew 11.6 percent, to $2.14 billion, on same-store sales.

The retailer last opened a new store in Oregon four years ago in the Salem area.

Gentile said she had not been notified of a signed lease with the mall and said Bed Bath & Beyond doesn't comment on new locations until leases are signed.

Rogue Valley Mall General Manager Jeff Barber did not return telephone calls on Monday.

SD Deacon Construction of Portland will head up the tenant improvement work that will rearrange the northeast corner of the mall for the second time in recent years.

Crews demolished the old movie theater in the location prior to the June 2003 opening, but this makeover should be somewhat easier because there won't be a great deal of concrete removal.
