Ballots are due in Gold Hill City Council election

Gold Hill city officials are reminding residents to get their ballots delivered to Election Offices in Medford by today's 8 p.m. deadline.

The only item in tonight's special election is a vacancy on the Gold Hill City Council that has remained open since write-ins selected by voters in May 2010 and November 2010 refused to accept the position.

Councilwoman Christine Alford said the city charter, approved by voters, prohibits the council from appointing members.

"Years ago, we had people sitting in a seat that they weren't elected to and no one ever wanted to run when election time came around," Alford explained.

"It's only one seat but it's what the citizens wanted, so it's just as relevant as the day the people in this town passed it."

Ballots for tonight's election must be delivered to Jackson County Elections Offices at 1101 W. Main St., Medford.

The available council seat is for a four-year term that expires in December 2014.
