Babilonia will appear at skating contest

Tai Babilonia, a five-time gold medal-winning U.S. figure skating pairs champion who recently moved to Ashland, will be a guest judge Saturday at a Medford figure skating competition.

Babilonia also will donate an award to the skater who best interprets his or her performance music during the Pear Blossom Classic competition at The Rrrink, 1349 Center Drive, Medford. The contest includes local student skaters who compete at various levels. It begins at 12:45 and is open to spectators. Admission is free.

The award is Babilonia's way of allowing the skaters to "have fun and tell a story out on the ice without having to worry about what jumps you can or cannot do," she said.

"This is an award that I have donated in the past to a few rinks in Los Angeles," said Babilonia. "Lately I have felt that the love of pure skating is quickly being squashed away and replaced with lots of difficult jumps and spins. It's becoming more and more technical and it looks more like mathematical skating instead of figure skating."

Details: 770-1177.
