Ashland, Upper Rogue rally for wins

Danial White's 35-yard touchdown throw to James Skinner brought Ashland back from a 12-0 halftime deficit as the Ashland Grizzlies defeated Medford Raiders 13-12 in the Rogue Valley Pop Warner Pee Wee championship game Sunday at Spiegelberg Stadium.

The win earned the Grizzlies an automatic berth in the state championship at Autzen Stadium on Nov. 11.

The Raiders, who handed Ashland (8-1) its only loss of the season, took a 6-0 lead on a long touchdown scamper on their first play from scrimmage. Then Medford returned a fumble right before the break to go up 12-0.

But in the second half, White capped a long drive with a 7-yard run for a score, and finished Ashland's comeback by finding Skinner. The go-ahead one-point conversion was run in by Jon Volz.

Medford's last-gasp attempt to retake the lead was thwarted when the Grizzly defense stuffed a fourth-down run inches short of a first down with less than three minutes remaining.

Volz led the Grizzlies in rushing and Matt Hedges made an interception in the second half for the Grizzlies.

The Junior Pee Wee Upper Rogue White Eagles also clawed back for victory at Spiegelberg Stadium.

Trailing the Medford Cowboys 24-13 at halftime, the White Eagles unleashed a fluid passing attack and rallied for a 26-24 victory and the Rogue Valley crown.

Upper Rogue plays a state playoff game Sunday at Reser Stadium in Corvallis against the Linn-Benton Association champion. The winner advances to the state title game Nov. 11 at Autzen.
