Ashland teachers' pay cut

Ashland teachers and other district employees will take a 5.1 percent pay cut when they return to school in the fall, the School Board decided Monday.

Superintendent Juli Di Chiro and Business Manager Jill Turner negotiated the cuts with the unions representing teachers and classified employees, such as educational assistants, cafeteria workers and custodians.

"We know that this budget represents an enormous amount of sacrifice," Board Chairman Mat Marr said Monday. "We strongly feel that we are committed to working together to move from budget numbers on a piece of paper to an exceptionally strong district."

The budget approved Monday represents a 14.8 percent reduction from the previous year's. In all, 56 positions were cut as the district grappled with declining state funds for education due to the recession, she said.
