Ashland has a promotion on leaf bags

ASHLAND — The city will offer a discount on compostable leaf bags beginning today to try to encourage residents to clean up leaves so they don't drift into storm drains and pollute creeks.

Ashland residents can buy a set of five compostable bags for $10 at Recology Ashland Sanitary Service, 170 Oak St., until Nov. 5. Packs of bags, which are 3 feet tall and hold 35 pounds, normally cost $14.50.

"The idea is to not have people just rake leaves to the curb and let them go down storm drains and pollute creeks, because they put a biological load on the creeks," said Larry Giardina, the city's conservation analyst.

Recology will pick up compostable bags full of leaves at curbs during green-bin collection days in November and December.

The city is subsidizing a limited number of discounted bags and households can purchase two sets. The Public Works Department is contributing $500 to help subsidize the bags and the city's Conservation Commission is paying $300.

Residents also can drop off leaves for free at the Ashland Recycle Center on Water Street between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Nov. 7 and 21, and Dec. 5.
