Ashland company recalls 1,300 fans

Ashland-based Modern Fan Co. is recalling about 1,300 of its fans because an internal problem can cause them to fall from the ceiling.

The company has received four reports of falling fans, but no reports of injuries.

“This is completely voluntary, and there’s just a very low level of risk, but it’s not worth having an incident occur,” said Dave Ellis, a company representative.

The Pensi-model ceiling fans were manufactured in China and sold online, as well as by lighting showrooms, fan specialty stores and electrical distributors around the country between August 2008 and July 2009.

The company has begun contacting people who purchased the fans and offering them a free replacement part, Ellis said.

The company has corrected the defect in current Pensi models and plans to continue to manufacture the fan, Ellis said.

An internal coupler, which connects the fan assembly to the motor, can break and cause the fan to fall from the ceiling, according to the company.
