Arbor Day ceremony honors historic pear trees

Harry & David will celebrate the induction of 10 Comice pear trees from Bear Creek Orchards into the Heritage Tree Program on Arbor Day, Saturday, April 30, at 1 p.m.

A Port Orford cedar from Camp Oregon Caves will also receive heritage status, and the public is invited to attend.

The dedication ceremony will be held in the rose garden on the Harry & David grounds, at 2500 S. Pacific Highway in Medford. Heritage Tree Program officials and other dignitaries will speak at the presentation.

Ten Comice pear trees remain from an original planting 75 years ago. Sixteen feet in height, the trees measure approximately 50 inches in circumference and remain healthy.

The Oregon Travel Information Council administers the Oregon Heritage Tree Program, which not only honors old-growth giants but also memorial groves and fruit orchards possessing historical and community significance.
