Air freight lowest since 2003

Air freight fell to its lowest level by weight since 2003 last year at Medford's airport, Jackson County Airport Authority reported.

The 7,093,858 pounds passing through airport gates was 11.5 percent below the 2006 total of 8,014,186 pounds.

Without a large infusion of Harry and David holiday shipping, which shifted to ground transportation, December's cargo load fell 26 percent to 683,286 pounds. Nonetheless, it was still the biggest month of the year for air freight at the Medford airport, topping the 638,186 pounds in May.

Inbound shipments to the Rogue Valley generally outweigh outbound packages, but in December 268,709 pounds went out vs. 262,625 pounds coming in. For all of 2007, for every seven pounds arriving, six pounds were shipped out.
