'I do' outside clerk's office will cost extra

Jackson County will collect an extra fee when the county clerk performs marriage ceremonies away from the courthouse, county commissioners decided today.

Under state statute, Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker charges $25 for each marriage she performs; now she will be able to charge an additional $25 for those performed away from the courthouse.

In the 2008-09 fiscal year, 160 of the 226 ceremonies were performed outside the clerk's offices, which requires about 40 minutes of time instead about 20 minutes for ceremonies in the office.

Walker estimates the new fees will generate about $4,000 annually in additional revenue for the county.

"This is not something I personally collected," she said. "It is going to the department."
