'Fill-the-Boot' coming

Jackson County firefighters' annual effort to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association is coming next month.

The "Fill-the-Boot" campaign, which has firefighters stand on street corners with boots to collect donations from passing motorists and pedestrians, is set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. The firefighters will be on South Sixth Street between Washburn and Austin streets.

All donations support local MDA programs and services, including support groups and equipment such as wheelchairs and leg braces. The proceeds from the firefighters' "Fill-The-Boot" also fund a clinic at Providence Medford Medical Center and help send Oregon children with muscle wasting diseases to MDA summer camp each year.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.

In connection with the fundraiser, county commissioners will declare the week of Aug. 9 Firefighter Appreciation Week.
